Information about Arrival

The automotive industry has witnessed significant changes in the past decade, with electric vehicles gaining traction globally. Amidst this change, Arrival, a British electric vehicle manufacturer, stands out for its commitment to innovation and sustainability. Headquartered in Howald, Luxembourg, Arrival specializes in manufacturing primarily lightweight commercial vehicles.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Arrival is its R&D facility in Banbury, Oxfordshire. Here, research and development activities are conducted rigorously to innovate and refine their electric vehicle platform. The company’s facility in Banbury serves as a hub for the design and production of multiple electric vehicle variants that can be adapted to various market needs. This focus on versatility has enabled Arrival to extend its product line to include buses, vans, and even a small vehicle platform.

Financially, Arrival has garnered strong backing to scale its operations. Notably, the company raised $118 million from US funds manager BlackRock in October 2020, adding to the $111 million investment previously made by Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co and sister company Kia Motors Corp. This strong financial backing has allowed Arrival to accelerate its plans for production and market reach.

While Arrival has its roots in the United Kingdom, it has established a significant presence in North America as well. The company set up its North American headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, signifying its intent to become a global player in the electric vehicle industry. Focusing on the United States allows Arrival to tap into a market that is becoming increasingly open to electric vehicles, aided by federal green energy subsidies.

Arrival has made the bold claim that its electric vehicles are the first to cost the same as their petrol and diesel counterparts. This is a significant breakthrough in the electric vehicle market, where the high initial cost has often been a deterrent for potential buyers. The company’s unique platform, which can be scaled to produce various vehicle types, plays a pivotal role in achieving this cost parity. Arrival plans to operationalize a new factory in Bicester, aiming to start production in 2022.

The company has also been proactive in adapting to market demands. In June 2020, it announced the development of a new passenger bus designed specifically for social distancing during the coronavirus era. Arrival is even extending its footprint in the ride-hailing sector. In May 2021, it revealed plans to produce electric cars specifically for Uber, with production expected to commence in the third quarter of 2023. Furthermore, the Arrival van, boasting a 120 kW engine and an impressive payload capacity, has attracted an order for 10,000 units from U.S.-based United Parcel Service (UPS), further validating the company’s potential.

However, it’s worth noting that the company has also faced challenges, including cutting half of its UK workforce in January 2023 to reduce costs. The company also shifted its focus to the United States to take advantage of green energy subsidies, indicating a strategic reorientation.
