The BMW X3 is a luxury SUV that has been in production since 2003 by BMW, based on the BMW 3 Series platform. Marketed as a Sports Activity Vehicle by BMW, the X3 is now in its third generation. The first-generation X3 was a result of collaboration between BMW and Magna Steyr in Austria, where all X3s were manufactured under contract to BMW. The second generation of the X3 was produced at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, United States.

With the introduction of the third generation, production of the X3 expanded to include BMW South Africa’s Rosslyn plant, alongside the Spartanburg plant. This move came after a significant upgrade to the Rosslyn facility to prepare for X3
