The BMW 5 Series, a prestigious executive car line introduced by BMW in 1972, is now in its eighth generation. Available as a sedan or a station wagon (known as the “Touring” model since 1991), the 5 Series has also seen the addition of a 5-door fastback variant (marketed as “Gran Turismo”) from 2009 to 2017. Starting in 2017, each generation of the BMW 5 Series has been identified by an internal G-code designation. Prior to this, a F-code system was used from 2010 to 2016, with an E-code system dating back to the inception of the car in 1972.
