The Ford GT40 Mk I was the first iteration of the GT40 series, developed to challenge Ferrari’s dominance at Le Mans. Initially equipped with a 4.2-liter V8 engine, it was later upgraded to a 4.7-liter engine. The Mk I was designed as a lightweight, mid-engine race car with a focus on aerodynamics and speed. However, it struggled with reliability issues in its early races, particularly at Le Mans in 1964 and 1965, where it failed to finish. Despite these setbacks, the Mk I gained valuable experience that paved the way for its successors. The Mk I eventually achieved notable successes, including a victory at the Daytona 2000 km in 1965, marking the beginning of Ford’s dominance in endurance racing. It was produced in both racing and road-going versions, with the latter featuring minor modifications like wire wheels and more comfortable interiors.
