The Mazda MX-5 (NC) is the third generation of the popular sports car that was produced from 2005 to 2015. Upon its debut in 2005, the NC model received the prestigious Car of the Year Japan Award and remained on Car and Driver’s 10Best list from 2006 to 2013. One of the notable features of the NC generation is the introduction of a retractable hardtop variant, making it the first MX-5 to offer this option. The hardtop could be folded or deployed in just 12 seconds, all without compromising trunk space.
During the initial years of production (2006-2008 – NC1 model), the NC MX-5 showcased exterior styling by Yasushi Nakamuta. Unlike its predecessor, the NB model, the NC1 did not share many components with it, except for the fender-mounted turn signal lights on models outside of the U.S. Additionally, the rear differential internals were carried over from the prior generation. The chief designer responsible for the overall look of the NC1 model was Moray Callum.
