The Mercedes-Benz W140 series, produced from 1991 to 1998, featured flagship vehicles in both sedan/saloon and coupe body styles with two wheelbase options, SE and SEL. Initially unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 1991, the W140 S-Class went on sale starting in April of the same year, followed by a North American launch on August 6, 1991.
In June 1993, all models in the W140 series underwent a renaming as part of a corporate-wide nomenclature change for the 1994 model year. This change standardized the naming convention to simply “S-Class” for all models, irrespective of wheelbase length, body style, or fuel type. Notably, diesel models were identified by a TURBODIESEL label on the trunk/boot lid.
Further developments in 1996 saw the S-Class coupe variant being rebranded as the CL-Class, creating a distinct model range of its own within the Mercedes-Benz lineup.
