The Mercedes-Benz GLE, previously known as the M-Class, is a mid-size luxury SUV that has been in production by Mercedes-Benz since 1997. Positioned between the smaller GLC and the larger GLS models, the GLE offers a balance between size and luxury. Originally designated as the ML-Class with the model code W163, the first-generation M-Class was a body-on-frame SUV which was produced until 2004. During the years 1999-2002, the W163 M-Class was also manufactured by Magna Steyr in Austria for the European market before moving all production to the U.S. plant in Alabama.
The second generation of the M-Class, known as the W164, transitioned to a unibody platform while sharing many components with the GL-Class model. The GL-Class features a longer body to accommodate third-row seating, distinguishing it from the GLE.
