Premier Ltd, originally established as Premier Automobiles Limited in 1944 by the visionary Walchand Hirachand in Mumbai, is a testament to India’s automotive history. Encouraged by the notable Sir M. Visvesvaraya, the company began as a significant player in the Indian car market. Its early success was marked by the Premier Padmini, initially launched as the Fiat 1100 Delight in 1964. This model became an iconic symbol of Indian motoring, enjoying immense popularity through the 1970s and ’80s, especially among celebrities and the middle class, due to its affordability and reliable performance.
The Padmini, named after a legendary 14th-century Rajput princess, ruled the roads until the advent of more modern competitors like Maruti Suzuki in the 1980s, a change further accelerated by economic liberalizations in the 1990s that opened up the Indian market to foreign manufacturers. Premier attempted to revive its fortunes with updated models and variants into the 2000s but could not regain its former glory.
In recent years, Premier faced significant challenges, culminating in its bankruptcy in 2018. The company shifted its focus from passenger vehicles to engineering and automotive segments, with operations now based in a modern facility in Pune. Although it attempted a comeback with the Premier RiO in 2009, the model did not achieve significant success, and production ultimately ceased as the company’s focus shifted away from automotive manufacturing
