Smart, an automotive brand synonymous with urban mobility and compact design, was founded in the early 1990s through a collaboration between Swatch, the Swiss watchmaker, and Mercedes-Benz. The brand’s innovative approach was spearheaded by Nicolas Hayek, Swatch’s CEO, who envisioned a car that embodied the same convenience and style as his popular Swatch watches.

The result was the Smart Fortwo, launched in 1998. This two-seater vehicle broke the mold with its ultra-compact size and innovative use of space, making it ideal for crowded city streets. Its unique, modular design allowed for easy customization and replacement of parts, which was a novel concept at the time.

Today, Smart continues to evolve, focusing on electric vehicles (EVs) to align with global sustainability efforts. The brand has faced challenges, such as fluctuating sales figures and market adaptation issues, but it remains a key player in the push towards urban electric mobility. Recent models boast enhanced technological features and improved range, securing Smart’s position in the competitive EV landscape and reaffirming its commitment to innovation and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
