Spartan Cars, a distinguished name in the kit car industry, was founded in 1973 by Jim McIntyre in Pinxton, Derbyshire, United Kingdom. The brand initially gained fame for its classic Roadster model, which was ingeniously based on the chassis and components of the Triumph Herald. This Roadster was known for its open, 2+2 seating configuration and a blend of traditional design enhanced by aluminium panels and fiberglass wings.

As the availability of the Triumph Herald declined, Spartan ingeniously adapted by designing a completely new chassis in 1980 that could accommodate parts from the Ford Cortina Mk III-V, ensuring the brand’s adaptability and survival in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape. The range expanded to include unique models like the Sherwood, an estate car, and the Starcraft, a six-wheel motor caravan, both also based on the Ford Cortina.

However, the company faced challenges and eventually ceased operations in 1995. Despite its closure, the legacy of Spartan Cars endures. The innovative designs and kits produced by Spartan continue to be cherished and restored by a dedicated new generation of enthusiasts, demonstrating the enduring appeal and impact of Jim McIntyre’s vision on the kit car community. Today, the Spartan brand is remembered not only for its vehicles but also for its significant role in the kit car culture that thrives on personalization and craftsmanship.
