The Toyota MR2 is a series of two-seater, mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive sports cars that were manufactured by Toyota from 1984 to 2007. The lineup spanned three generations: W10 (1984–1989), W20 (1989–1999), and W30 (1999–2007). The MR2 was Japan’s first production car to feature a rear mid-engine layout.

Designed as a compact, fuel-efficient, and sporty vehicle, the MR2 incorporates straightforward yet efficient components such as an inline-four engine located transversely in front of the rear axle, four-wheel disc brakes, and fully independent coilover suspension featuring MacPherson struts in the front and Chapman struts in the rear.

The name “MR2” carries a dual meaning: it stands for “mid-ship run-about 2-seater” and also represents “mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive, 2-seater.” In French-speaking regions, the car was rebranded as the Toyota MR due to the phonetic similarity between “MR2” and the French profanity “merde.”
