The Vauxhall Astra is a compact car/small family car belonging to the C-segment that has been produced by Vauxhall since 1980. The Astra has had eight generations and has been manufactured at various GM/Opel/Stellantis plants across Europe, with a majority from Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant in England. Initially, the Astra was essentially a right-hand drive version of the Opel Kadett for the UK market. From 1991 onwards, Opel has branded its B/C-platform models as the Astra.
In the United States, General Motors’ Saturn division offered a Belgian-assembled version of the Astra as a captive import from late 2007 until GM’s bankruptcy in 2010 led to the discontinuation of Saturn.
The first generation of the Vauxhall Astra, spanning from 1980 to 1984, was based on the front-wheel-drive Opel Kadett D that launched in 1979. The Astra replaced the Vauxhall Viva in the UK market. Prior to the Astra, the Vauxhall Chevette, which was based on the last rear-wheel drive Kadett, was produced until 1984.
