The Volkswagen Type 2 (T3) was the third generation of the Volkswagen Transporter, known by various names globally. It was marketed under different nameplates such as Transporter, Caravelle, T25, Microbus, Kombi, Kampeerauto, Combi, and Vanagon in different regions around the world. The T3 was larger, heavier, and featured a more angular design compared to its predecessor, the T2, but it maintained the rear-engine, cab-over layout. It was available in rear-wheel drive and a 4WD version known as “Syncro.”

Production of the T3 took place in Hannover, Germany from 1979 until 1991. The Syncro models were manufactured until 1992 in Graz, Austria, specifically for official use like postal services and the German army. The 4WD models were all built at the Graz factory. Additionally, a limited number of 2WD models were also produced at the Graz factory after the German production ceased.
