The Volkswagen Golf Mk5, also known as Typ 1K, is a compact/small family car produced by Volkswagen and served as the fifth generation of the Golf series. It was available in three- or five-door hatchback versions from August 2003 to 2008 and a five-door station wagon from 2007 to 2009. The Golf Mk5 was designed on the Volkswagen Group A5 (PQ35) platform and made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in October 2003, hitting the European market as a 2004 model.

In the United States and Canada, the Mk5 was known as the Volkswagen Rabbit, with the GTI variant marketed as the Volkswagen GTI. The model featured revised suspension, chassis tuning, and increased cargo space compared to its predecessor, leading to a slightly larger overall size. The cargo volume of the Mk5 saw a small increase of around 0.7 cubic feet (20 L), providing more practicality and storage options for users.

In 2009, the Golf Mk5 was succeeded by the Golf Mk6, which utilized the same platform for its construction. The Mk5’s design enhancements and improvements aimed to maintain the Golf’s reputation as a popular choice in the compact car segment, offering a balance of performance, practicality, and reliability. Overall, the Golf Mk5 served as a key member of the Volkswagen Golf lineup, contributing to the brand’s continued success in the global automotive market.
