The Chinese version of the Volkswagen Jetta has been manufactured by the joint venture FAW-Volkswagen since 1991. In 2019, the Jetta was spun off from Volkswagen to become its own brand, known as the Jetta VA3. The first generation of the Jetta in China was produced under the name Jetta Mk2/A2/King/Pioneer, with production commencing on December 5, 1991. Initially, the vehicles were sold as complete knock down (CKD) kits, but the manufacturing process transitioned to Semi-Knocked Down kits in 1992, and by 1995, full local production was achieved.
One of the key milestones in the production of the Chinese Volkswagen Jetta was the upgrade from a 4-speed manual gearbox to a 5-speed manual gearbox in 1996. This change reflected advancements in technology and improved driving experience for consumers. The Jetta was the first Volkswagen model produced in China under the partnership with FAW-Volkswagen, marking a significant moment in the collaboration between the two companies.
The transition of the Jetta to its own marque in 2019 signifies the growing importance and success of the model in the Chinese market. By establishing itself as a standalone brand, the Jetta VA3 aims to further differentiate itself and cater to the unique preferences of Chinese consumers. This move showcases Volkswagen’s strategic approach to adapting to local market demands and enhancing its presence in China’s competitive automotive industry.
