The Volkswagen Passat, a prominent nameplate in the D-segment of large family cars, has been manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1973. Over the years, it has been sold under various names such as Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar, and Carat in different body styles including saloon, estate, and hatchback.
In 2008, a sleek “four-door coupé” version of the Passat was introduced in the North American market as the Passat CC, later rebranded as the Volkswagen CC. The CC was eventually succeeded by the Arteon in 2017, maintaining Volkswagen’s reputation for stylish and innovative design.
Continuing its evolution, Volkswagen launched a distinct Passat model line called the “Volkswagen New Midsize Sedan” or NMS in January 2011. The NMS was strategically manufactured in the US at the Chattanooga assembly plant and in China by SAIC-Volkswagen. This move aimed to bolster Volkswagen sales in North America by offering a larger and more cost-effective model tailored to the preferences of American consumers.
The Passat NMS has proven successful in the market, particularly in North America, South Korea, China, and the Middle East. It has gained popularity for its spacious design, affordability, and efficient production model. The strategic localization of production facilities has further enhanced the brand’s competitiveness in these key regions.
