The Volkswagen Type 2 (T3), also known by various nameplates globally, was the third generation of the popular Volkswagen Transporter. Marketed as the Transporter or Caravelle in Europe, T25 in the UK, Microbus and Kombi in South Africa/Brazil/Australia, Kampeerauto in the Netherlands, Combi in France, and Vanagon in North and South America, the T3 was a versatile and iconic vehicle.

The T3 was larger, heavier, and more angular in design compared to its predecessor, the T2, but retained the rear-engine, cab-over layout. It was available in both rear wheel drive and a 4WD version known as the “Syncro,” offering enhanced traction and capabilities for various uses.

Manufactured in Hannover, Germany from 1979 to 1991, the T3 played a significant role in the automotive industry. The production of the Syncro model continued until 1992 at the Puch factory in Graz, Austria, where all 4WD variants were assembled. Additionally, a limited number of 2WD models were also produced in Graz after the German production had ceased.
