The B3 Passat underwent a substantial facelift in 1993, resulting in a new designation as the B4 model. However, it was not an entirely new model as the changes were mainly cosmetic. The facelift included replacing every external body panel except for the roof and glasshouse. Notably, a grille was reintroduced to align the Passat’s style with other Volkswagen models of the same era, like the Mk3 Golf and Jetta. Inside, the car received minor updates, incorporating safety features like dual front airbags and seat belt pretensioners. Although the basic dashboard design remained unchanged.
The B4 Passat was available with a variety of engine options, including the noteworthy Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) diesel engine. This engine was an inline four-cylinder 1.9-liter turbodiesel, offering fuel efficiency and torque for a responsive driving experience.
In late 1996, the B4 Passat sedan gave way to the newer B5 Passat model, signaling the end of the B4’s production run. The B4 Passat’s refresh not only brought it in line with the design language of contemporary Volkswagen models but also introduced important safety features to enhance the driving experience. The availability of the TDI diesel engine provided customers with a diverse range of engine choices to suit their preferences for power and fuel efficiency.
