The Volkswagen Scirocco is a sporty hatchback that was produced in two generations from 1974 to 1992 and a third generation from 2008 to 2017. The name “Scirocco” is inspired by the Mediterranean wind.

In the first generation introduced in 1974, Volkswagen developed the Scirocco as a successor to the Karmann Ghia coupe. The car, internally designated as Typ 53, shared the platform of the Golf but underwent extensive re-engineering to give it a sleek and sporty design. Renowned designer Giorgetto Giugiaro is credited with penning the stylish exterior.

Key Points:
1. The Scirocco is a front-engine, front-wheel-drive, three-door hatchback known for its sporty design.
2. The car was designed to replace the Karmann Ghia coupe and was internally labeled as Typ 53 by Volkswagen.
3. The platform of the Golf served as the base for the Scirocco, but the car underwent significant re-engineering to distinguish it from the Golf, with a sportier and more aerodynamic design.
4. The first generation Scirocco was introduced in 1974 and featured a distinctive appearance created by renowned designer Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Despite its popularity, production of the Scirocco ended in 2017 without a direct successor. The car left a lasting legacy in the sport compact hatchback segment with its innovative design and performance capabilities.
