The Volkswagen Tiguan is a popular series of crossover SUVs produced by German automaker Volkswagen since 2007. Positioned between the smaller T-Roc and larger Touareg in Volkswagen’s lineup, the Tiguan is known for its versatility and practicality. The first generation was built on the PQ46 platform, while the subsequent generation, introduced in 2016, is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB A2 platform.
In Europe, the Tiguan is typically categorized as a medium-sized SUV, but in North America, it is seen as a compact crossover. The name “Tiguan” is a combination of the German words for “tiger” and “iguana” and was selected through a naming contest held by German car magazine publisher Auto Bild, beating out other options such as Namib, Rockton, Samun, and Nanuk.
By the spring of 2020, over six million units of the Tiguan had been sold globally, highlighting its immense popularity. In 2019 alone, 910,926 units were produced, further solidifying the Tiguan’s status as the best-selling vehicle within the Volkswagen Group. Known for its blend of style, practicality, and features, the Tiguan has become a go-to choice for those seeking a reliable and versatile crossover SUV.
