The Volkswagen Type 2 (T3), also known by various nameplates worldwide, was the third generation of the iconic Volkswagen Transporter series. It was larger and more angular in design compared to its predecessor, the T2, but retained the rear-engine, cab-over layout. The T3 was marketed under different names such as Transporter, Caravelle, T25, Microbus, Kombi, Kampeerauto, Combi, and Vanagon in different regions.
This model was produced in both rear-wheel drive and a 4WD variant called “Syncro,” catering to different consumer needs. Manufacturing of the T3 took place in Hannover, Germany from 1979 to 1991. Despite the end of production in Germany, the 4WD Syncro version continued to be made until 1992 at the Puch factory in Graz, Austria. The 4WD Syncro models were often employed for official purposes like postal services or German military use.
The T3’s legacy extended beyond its production years, with the Graz factory also producing a limited number of 2WD models post-1991. The T3 was known for its practicality, reliability, and versatility, making it popular for various applications from family transportation to commercial use.
