The Volkswagen Type 4 was a compact/midsize family car manufactured by Volkswagen of Germany from 1968 to 1974, available in two-door and four-door sedan, and two-door station wagon body styles. It went through two generations: the 411 (1968–1972) and 412 series (1972–1974). The Type 4 was Volkswagen’s largest passenger vehicle during its production run and featured the largest engine offered by the company at the time.
The design of the Type 4 was overseen by Heinrich Nordhoff and was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 1968. The styling of the Type 4 was credited to Carrozzeria Pininfarina, a design firm that had an advisory contract with Volkswagen.
