The Volkswagen Gol is a subcompact car introduced by Volkswagen do Brasil in 1980, serving as the company’s entry-level offering in the Latin American market. It replaced the Volkswagen Type 1 (Fusca) and the Volkswagen Brasilia. The Gol has had various versions, including three- and five-door hatchbacks, two- and four-door sedans known as the Volkswagen Voyage, three- and five-door station wagons called the Volkswagen Parati, and two-door coupé utilities like the Volkswagen Saveiro. Additionally, North American variants based on the Gol were marketed as the Volkswagen Fox from 1987 to 1993.

This model has enjoyed immense popularity in Brazil, holding the title of the country’s best-selling car for 27 consecutive years from 1987 to 2014. In Argentina, the Gol has been the most popular car since 1988. Over five million Gols have been produced in South America since its inception. In March 2013, Volkswagen confirmed that the cumulative production of all Gol derivatives—Voyage, Saveiro, and Parati—had surpassed 10 million units.
