For half a century, BMW has seamlessly merged art and automotive engineering with its iconic Art Car Collection. What began as a bold experiment has evolved into a globally recognized series of “rolling sculptures” that capture the spirit of creativity, innovation, and motorsport. Now, in 2025, BMW is celebrating the 50th anniversary of this remarkable collection with a worldwide tour, showcasing these masterpieces across five continents.
Since 1975, the BMW Art Car Collection has featured works from renowned artists like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jenny Holzer, and Jeff Koons. These visionary creators have transformed high-performance vehicles into mobile works of art, blending abstract concepts, pop art, minimalism, and digital innovation. From Alexander Calder’s original 3.0 CSL to Julie Mehretu’s latest BMW M Hybrid V8, each Art Car tells a unique story of cultural evolution and artistic expression.
To commemorate its 50th anniversary, BMW is launching an unprecedented world tour. Highlights include:
Vienna (March 20-21) – Works by Lichtenstein, Warhol, Rauschenberg, Hockney, and Koons will be displayed at the Museum of Applied Arts and SPARK Art Fair.
Hong Kong (March 28-30) – Mehretu’s newest BMW Art Car takes center stage at Art Basel.
Lake Como (May 23-25) – The 13th BMW Art Car by Sandro Chia will be showcased at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
Munich (June-December) – The BMW Museum will present a historic retrospective, featuring the M3 Art Cars of Sandro Chia, Michael Jagamara Nelson, and Ken Done.
The Hague (July-August) – Eight legendary Art Cars will be displayed at the Louwman Museum.
Julie Mehretu’s contribution to the series goes beyond aesthetics. Her BMW M Hybrid V8 serves as a platform for global artistic engagement. In collaboration with the African Film and Media Arts Collective, she will lead workshops for emerging artists across five African nations. The results will be showcased in 2026 at the Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, reinforcing BMW’s commitment to cultural innovation.
Beyond exhibitions, BMW is expanding the Art Car legacy with exclusive releases. A new edition of the BMW Art Cars book, a scaled model of Mehretu’s Art Car, and a limited-edition BMW Art Car-inspired fashion line with Puma will all launch later this year, ensuring the fusion of art and automobiles continues to inspire future generations.
The BMW Art Car Collection is more than just an automotive project—it’s a testament to 50 years of artistic freedom, pushing boundaries in both art and performance. As the world tour unfolds, enthusiasts and art lovers alike will witness history in motion, reaffirming that creativity knows no limits—even on four wheels.
