Acura Legend KA7

1990 – 1996 · Japan

The Acura Legend, a mid-size luxury car manufactured by Honda from Japan, was marketed in the U.S. and Canada under Honda's luxury brand, Acura, from 1985 to 1995. It was the first flagship sedan to be sold under the Acura nameplate, setting the foundation for Honda's luxury division. In 1996, it was rebranded as the Acura 3.5RL, which was the North American version of the KA9 series Honda Legend. During the 1980s, Japanese manufacturers faced restrictions on mainstream car sales due to voluntary export restraints negotiated between the Japanese government and U.S. trade representatives. This presented an opportunity for Japanese brands to export higher-priced models, leading to the introduction of the Acura Legend. The success of the Legend and the Acura division in challenging established European and American luxury car manufacturers paved the way for other Japanese automakers to enter the luxury market segment. The Acura Legend played a pivotal role in shaping the luxury car market in North America, with its combination of performance, comfort, and reliability appealing to consumers seeking a premium driving experience. Its introduction influenced competitors like Toyota and Nissan to launch their luxury brands, Lexus and Infiniti, respectively, to compete in the upscale automotive market. In summary, the Acura Legend was a groundbreaking luxury car that helped establish Acura as a formidable competitor in the premium segment and influenced the expansion of other Japanese luxury brands in North America.
