It is short, but it is a proper climb, with tight bends cut into the hillside and views back over the city. At the top, the Scenic Hotel is a classic stop. Carry on through Ashton and Basket Range, or link it with Gorge Road for a longer Adelaide Hills loop.

The Lyell Highway from Derwent Bridge to Queenstown crosses some of the wildest country in Australia, through the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, past Lake Burbury and over the West Coast Range. The finale is the descent into Queenstown, a long sequence of bends down bare, mine-scarred hillsides that look like nowhere else. Stop at Nelson Falls and the Lake Burbury lookouts on the way.

This section of the Great Alpine Road climbs steeply out of Harrietville, up through snow gum country to Mount Hotham and along the exposed ridge to Dinner Plain. It is one of the highest roads in Australia, with long views over the Alps in every direction. In winter this is ski country and the rules change completely, so check road conditions before you go. Bright, below Harrietville, makes a good base.

The road winds along the ridge through tall forest to the small village of Mount Glorious, then on towards Wivenhoe. It is Brisbane's go-to quick escape, so it is busy on weekends. Stop at the cafes at the top and the lookouts along the ridge.

The Putty Road runs north from Windsor on Sydney's north-western edge, through the wilderness between Wollemi and Yengo National Parks, to the Hunter Valley. For most of its length there is nothing but bush, ridges and long flowing bends. It is a classic Sunday run for Sydney drivers and riders. Colo Heights and the roadside cafes along the way are the traditional stops.

The Oxley Highway between Wauchope and Walcha climbs from the Hastings River valley near Port Macquarie up the Great Dividing Range onto the New England tableland. The middle section, through forest beyond Long Flat and up the escarpment, is one long run of bends and is a favourite with motorcyclists. The road is long and remote, so plan your fuel and food. Walcha at the top is a good place for a break before heading back down.

The Black Spur is the section of the Maroondah Highway between Healesville and Narbethong, where the road climbs through a cathedral of mountain ash, some of the tallest flowering trees on earth, with a carpet of tree ferns below. It is a highway, not a back road, so it is more about the setting than the pace. Stop at the Black Spur Inn in Narbethong, then come back via the Reefton Spur for a full loop.

The Reefton Spur runs from Warburton up the Warburton-Woods Point Road to Reefton, then over the range on the Marysville-Woods Point Road to Marysville. It is a long, near-unbroken run of bends through tall mountain ash forest, and one of the best-known driving roads near Melbourne. There are no towns and no fuel between Warburton and Marysville, so fill up first. Turn it into a loop by coming home over the Black Spur.

Gorge Road
Gorge Road follows the River Torrens out of Adelaide's north-eastern suburbs and up into the Adelaide Hills. From Athelstone it winds through the Torrens Gorge between cliffs and rock cuttings, past the Kangaroo Creek Reservoir and on to Cudlee Creek. It is one of the city's favourite Sunday drives, and only 20 minutes from the suburbs. Loop back through Gumeracha, Lobethal or Norton Summit to make a morning of it.

Great Ocean Road
The Great Ocean Road was built by returned soldiers after the First World War and is the world's largest war memorial. It runs along Victoria's south-west coast from Torquay, past surf beaches, through Lorne and Apollo Bay, inland through the Otway rainforest and back out to the cliffs and the Twelve Apostles. The stretch from Lorne to Apollo Bay is the classic driving section, a long run of bends right on the edge of the sea. Go early, because the whole road gets busy with tour buses by mid morning.

Bealach na Bà
Bealach na Bà, the Pass of the Cattle, climbs from sea level to 626 m on its way to the Applecross peninsula. It has one of the greatest ascents of any road in the UK, with gradients of up to 20 percent and tight hairpins near the top that feel more alpine than Highland. It is single track with passing places, so it is not a road for pushing on. Take it slowly, enjoy the view across to Skye from the summit, and have lunch at the Applecross Inn.

The Furka Pass links Realp in Uri with Gletsch in Valais, climbing to 2,429 m. It found fame in Goldfinger, where Bond's Aston Martin DB5 chases a Ford Mustang through its bends, and it has been on driving bucket lists ever since. The west side is the showpiece: a run of hairpins past the old Hotel Belvédère on the edge of the Rhône Glacier, with views down to Gletsch and the Grimsel road. Link it with the Grimsel and Susten passes for a classic loop.

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road runs 48 km from Fusch in Salzburg to Heiligenblut in Carinthia, crossing the main ridge of the Alps at the Hochtor at 2,504 m. Trollstigen, the Troll's Ladder, climbs out of the Isterdalen valley in 11 hairpin bends cut into an almost vertical mountainside, with the Stigfossen waterfall crashing down beside the road. At the top, a viewing platform hangs over the edge so you can look straight down the bends you just drove. The route here runs from Åndalsnes over the top and down through the valley to Valldal. Carry on to Geiranger for one of the best days of driving in Europe.

The Atlantic Ocean Road (Atlanterhavsvegen) hops across a string of small islands on the edge of the Norwegian Sea, linked by eight low bridges. The Storseisundet Bridge is the star: it rises and twists so that from some angles it looks like it ends in mid-air. It is short, so it is more about the setting than the driving. Go in calm weather for the views or in a storm to watch the waves break over the road, then carry on to Trollstigen for the mountain half of the trip.

Highway 1 through Big Sur runs along the edge of the Santa Lucia Mountains where they drop straight into the Pacific. From Carmel it crosses Bixby Creek Bridge, winds through redwood canyons and then hugs the cliffs for mile after mile of coastline. This is a road to take slowly. It was built in the early 1970s as a military route, and the northern side is the picture everyone knows: a ribbon of hairpins and long switchbacks climbing a bare glacial valley to Bâlea Lake at about 2,040 m. Stelvio Pass
The Stelvio Pass climbs from Prato allo Stelvio in South Tyrol to 2,757 m, then drops into Bormio on the Lombardy side. The northern climb is the famous one: 48 numbered hairpins stacked up the mountainside, each a tight left or right with barely a straight between them. The Bormio side is faster and more open, with tunnels and sweeping bends. Do it both ways if you can, and stop at the top for the view back down the hairpins.
