The Transfăgărășan (DN7C) crosses the Făgăraș Mountains, the highest range in Romania. It was built in the early 1970s as a military route, and the northern side is the picture everyone knows: a ribbon of hairpins and long switchbacks climbing a bare glacial valley to Bâlea Lake at about 2,040 m. A tunnel takes you under the ridge, then the south side winds down through forest past Vidraru Dam. Allow a full day. You will stop more than you think.
