The first-generation X3 was designed in collaboration with Magna Steyr of Graz, Austria, and all X3s were manufactured by them under contract from BMW. The second-generation X3 was produced at BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA. However, with the third generation, production also began at BMW South Africa's Rosslyn plant. This move came after a significant upgrade to the facility, which can now produce approximately 76,000 units annually.
