The Audi 920 was launched in 1938 as a replacement for the Audi Front UW 225, under the Auto Union brand. It was positioned to fill the gap between the premium Horch models and the mid-range offerings from Wanderer. Sharing its engine with sister company Horch, the 920 was powered by a 3,281 cc front-mounted six-cylinder in-line engine based on a shortened version of the eight-cylinder engine used in Horch vehicles. Since Audi did not have its own manufacturing facilities at the time, production of the 920 took place at the Horch plant.
