The BYD Flyer is a compact 5-door city car that was initially developed by the government-owned Xian Qinchuan Automobile. It was first introduced in 2001 and was on sale until 2005. Following this, the production of the Flyer was taken over by BYD, a prominent Chinese automaker based in Shenzhen, and continued until 2008. The Flyer is powered by three- and four-cylinder engines that are derived from older Suzuki units. The origins of the Flyer can be traced back to Qinchuan Machinery Works, a subsidiary of Norinco and the People's Liberation Army, based in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.
