Chevrolet Corvair 1st Gen

1960 – 1965 · USA

The Chevrolet Corvair was a unique rear-engined, air-cooled compact car produced by Chevrolet over two generations from 1960 to 1969. It was designed as a response to the popular Volkswagen Beetle and aimed to provide American consumers with a different kind of car choice. The first generation of the Corvair, manufactured between 1960 and 1964, offered a variety of body styles including 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe, convertible, station wagon, passenger van, commercial van, and pickup truck. In its second generation produced from 1965 to 1969, the Corvair was available as a 2-door coupe, convertible, or 4-door hardtop. The total production of Chevrolet Corvair vehicles during its manufacturing period amounted to approximately 1.8 million units. The name "Corvair" was initially used in 1954 for a Corvette-based concept car featuring a hardtop fastback-styled roof that was part of the Motorama exhibition. The key distinguishing feature of the Corvair was its rear-mounted engine and air-cooled system, which set it apart from traditional American cars of that era. Overall, the Chevrolet Corvair offered consumers a different driving experience with its unique design and engineering. While it faced some controversies and safety concerns during its production period, the Corvair remains a notable part of automotive history for its unconventional layout and contribution to diversifying the compact car market in the 1960s
