The Malibu Maxx was a hatchback-style extended-wheelbase variant introduced for 2004, offering a longer roofline and a sliding rear seat that gave it notably more interior flexibility than the standard sedan. It was available with a 3.5-liter V6 producing 243 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque, paired with a front-wheel-drive automatic transmission. The Maxx targeted buyers who wanted wagon-like practicality without the wagon badge, and it continued in production through 2007, a year after the standard second-generation Malibu was replaced.
