Chrysler Valiant Charger CL

1976 – 1978

The Chrysler Valiant Charger CL, produced from 1976 to 1978, represents the final generation of Australia's homegrown two-door muscle coupe, closing out a lineage that had run through the VH, VJ, and VK series. Power came from Chrysler's Australian-built Hemi six-cylinder engines, the same family of units that had defined the Charger's performance reputation since the VH's launch in 1971, including the storied E-series variants that had made earlier Chargers genuine performance benchmarks. By the CL's run, the muscle car era was contracting under the pressure of tightening emissions standards and fuel economy concerns, and the CL reflected that broader industry shift while still offering the Hemi six in various states of tune. Its significance lies largely in its position as the end of the line, making CL examples the last of a distinctly Australian take on the coupe body style that Chrysler Australia had developed independently from its American parent.
