The Daihatsu Hijet is a cab over microvan and kei truck that has been in production since 1960 by the Japanese automaker Daihatsu. Despite its similar name to Toyota's HiAce and Hilux models, the Hijet has been utilized by Daihatsu for its kei trucks and microvans well before Toyota's adoption of the naming scheme. The name "Hijet," derived from the transliteration of "Midget," was chosen by Daihatsu to suggest higher performance compared to their other mini-truck model. The Hijet is designed to compete in the Japanese market against vehicles such as the Honda Acty, Mitsubishi Minicab, Nissan Clipper, Subaru Sambar, and Suzuki Carry.
