The DS 4, previously known as the Citroën DS4 before 2015, falls under the luxury DS sub-brand, which was spun off as an independent brand by Citroën. In its current iteration, the car is in its second generation as of 2021, utilizing the new EMP2 platform shared with the Opel Astra L and Peugeot 308 III. Positioned in the lineup above the DS 3 and below the DS 7 Crossback, it is classified as a compact car. Originally launched internationally in March 2011, the DS 4 shares its base with the Citroën C4 II.
