Side exhaust ports, a 9,000rpm redline, and Engine of the Year in 2003.
The naturally aspirated Renesis rotary of the RX-8. Moving the exhaust ports to the side housings improved sealing and emissions and allowed a 9,000rpm redline. It won International Engine of the Year in 2003.
