Race-derived and dry-sumped, and the reason 996 and 997 Turbos avoided the IMS problem.
The dry-sumped flat-six designed by Hans Mezger, derived from the 911 GT1 Le Mans engine and used in the 996 and 997 Turbo, GT2 and GT3. It shares nothing with the standard water-cooled engines of the period, and sidesteps the intermediate shaft bearing failures that dogged them.
