The name "Barchetta" translates to "little boat" in Italian, reflecting its sleek and open-top sports car design. The car was developed between 1990 and 1994 as the Tipo B Spider 176 project. Designed by Andreas Zapatinas and Alessandro Cavazza under the guidance of Peter Barrett Davis and other Fiat car designers at Centro Stile Fiat, the prototyping was overseen by Stola.
