The Hyundai Elantra, or Hyundai Avante in Korea, is a compact car manufactured by Hyundai since 1990. Initially known as the Lantra in Australia and selected European markets to avoid naming conflicts, it was later renamed Elantra worldwide in 2001, except in certain regions. The decision to standardize the name was due to similarities with competitor models like the Mitsubishi Magna Elante and Audi's Avant designation for station wagons. Launched as the Elantra (codenamed J1) in October 1990, the model underwent a facelift in 1993.
