Lea Francis

Lea-Francis, an illustrious name in the annals of British automaking, traces its origins back to 1895 when Richard Henry Lea and Graham Ingoldsby Francis founded the company in Coventry. Initially, they focused on bicycles and motorcycles, but by 1903, they ventured into the automotive industry, creating vehicles celebrated for their innovation and quality. Their earliest cars, including the notable 10 hp model, showcased a commitment to engineering excellence with features like a three-speed gearbox and shaft drive, which were advanced for their time. The brand's prowess peaked in the 1920s and 1930s, highlighted by their sporting successes, such as the victory in the 1925 Ards TT race with the Lea-Francis Hyper, a supercharged model that left an indelible mark on motorsport history. However, the post-war era was challenging for Lea-Francis, with financial difficulties leading to the cessation of car production in 1960. Despite attempts to revive the brand in later years, including a brief resurgence in the 1980s and 1990s with a few hand-built models, the company could not reclaim its former glory. Today, Lea-Francis remains a revered name among classic car enthusiasts, celebrated for its historical contributions rather than contemporary achievements.
