Leyland P76 1st Gen

1973 – 1975

The Leyland P76 was a large rear-wheel-drive sedan built by British Leyland's Australian subsidiary between 1973 and 1975, positioned to challenge the dominant Holden Kingswood and Ford Falcon in the local full-size car segment. As the only generation of the P76 to reach production, it represented British Leyland's most ambitious attempt to establish a serious foothold in the Australian market. The car was notably engineered with Australian conditions and tastes in mind, and it became well known for its exceptionally large boot, famously marketed as capable of swallowing a 44-gallon drum. Despite winning the 1973 Wheels Car of the Year award, production was cut short by British Leyland's financial difficulties and the closure of the Australian manufacturing operation in 1975.
