Lotus Seven

1957 – 1972

Lotus›Seven

The Lotus Seven is a lightweight, open-top sports car produced by Lotus from 1957 to 1972, built around the company's core philosophy of achieving performance through minimal weight rather than outright power. Designed by Colin Chapman, the Seven used a simple tubular spaceframe chassis, cycle-style front fenders, and no doors, resulting in a car that weighed well under 500 kg in early forms and delivered sharp, immediate handling responses. Through its production life the Seven progressed through four series, each refining the suspension, body, and available powertrains, with engines sourced from Ford, BMC, and Cosworth among others. The Super Seven variants offered more potent engine options, and when Lotus discontinued the model in 1972, the design was sold to Caterham Cars, which continues to produce closely related cars to this day.
