Mercedes-AMG S-Class W220

1999 – 2005 · GERMANY

The Mercedes-Benz W220 was introduced as the fourth generation S-Class flagship sedans, replacing the W140 S-Class in 1998. It offered long and short wheelbase versions, performance, luxury options, and a range of engine choices including diesel, V6, V8, and V12 variants. Additionally, it was available with four-wheel drive for enhanced handling. Notable features of the W220 included slightly smaller exterior dimensions compared to its predecessor, the W140, but provided greater interior volume, particularly in the long-wheelbase models. The design process for the W220 began in 1992 and was led by Steve Mattin, with the final approval of the design in June 1995. Prototypes were completed and unveiled in June 1998. Production of the W220 started in April 1997 for the 1999 model year, with the coupé version (C215) entering production a year later in 1998.
