The C208/A208 Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class was introduced in 1997 as the first generation of the CLK lineup. Based on the W202 Mercedes-Benz C-Class launched in 1994, the C208 offered a stylish and sporty coupe design. In 2002, the C208 coupé was replaced by the C209 CLK-Class for the 2003 model year, while the convertible variant continued production until March 2003 when it was succeeded by the A209 CLK. Production of the C208 CLK coupé ceased in May 2002, with a total of 233,367 units manufactured, while an additional 115,161 cabriolets were assembled at the Karmann plant in Osnabrück. The first generation CLK received positive reception for its design, performance, and luxury features. The history of the CLK-Class traces back to 1993 when Mercedes unveiled the Coupé Concept at the Geneva Motor Show. This concept previewed the distinctive four-headlamp front end and fastback rear design that would later be seen on the production models. The concept car boasted a powerful 5-liter V8 engine generating 320 PS and 470 Nm of torque, showcasing the potential performance capabilities of the future CLK models.
