Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class X167 AMG

2020 – 2024 · GERMANY

The M176/M177/M178 petrol V8 engine range by Mercedes-AMG is a powerful and efficient upgrade from the previous M278 and M157 engines. It is based on the M133 engine, known for its performance capabilities. The key feature of these engines is the use of two BorgWarner turbochargers placed in a "hot-V" configuration between the cylinder heads, enhancing performance output. The fuel injection system of the M176/M177/M178 engines incorporates Bosch's latest piezo-electric direct fuel injectors, delivering five squirts of fuel per combustion cycle. This innovative technology ensures precise fuel delivery for optimal engine performance and efficiency. The manufacturing process differs for the M176, M177, and M178 engines. The M176 engines are primarily assembled by machines, with certain components put together by technicians at the Untertürkheim manufacturing center near Stuttgart. On the other hand, the M177 and M178 engines follow the unique "one man, one engine" principle at the AMG manufacturing facility in Affalterbach. This approach involves skilled technicians individually assembling each engine, ensuring a high level of attention to detail and quality control. In summary, the Mercedes-AMG M176/M177/M178 petrol V8 engine range combines cutting-edge turbocharger technology, advanced fuel injection systems, and meticulous assembly processes to deliver high-performance engines that meet the brand's standards for power, efficiency, and precision.
