The Mercedes-Benz R-Class is a mid-size luxury MPV that was first introduced in 2005 for the 2006 model year. It was developed following the success of the smaller A- and B-Class MPVs, with Mercedes collaborating with coachbuilder Stola to present concept vehicles, the Vision GST and Vision R, at the Detroit Auto Shows in 2002 and 2004, respectively. The production version was then officially unveiled at the 2005 New York International Auto Show. Manufactured initially in Vance, Alabama, the production of the R-Class was later shifted to Mishawaka, Indiana from 2015 to 2017 for smaller volume production. The R-Class (W251) shared its platform with the M-Class (W164) and GL-Class (X164) and was distinguished by its availability in two wheelbase lengths: a standard 2,980 mm (117.3 in) and a long 3,215 mm (126.6 in).
