The Oldsmobile Toronado is a personal luxury car produced by General Motors under the Oldsmobile division from 1966 to 1992 across four generations. Noteworthy for its transaxle version of GM's Turbo-Hydramatic transmission, the Toronado was the first U.S.-built front-wheel drive car after the Cord 810/812 in 1937 became defunct. The Toronado adopted the GM E platform from the rear-wheel drive Buick Riviera introduced in 1963 and later employed in the front-wheel drive 1967 Cadillac Eldorado. Throughout its 26-year existence, the Toronado, along with the Riviera and Eldorado, shared the E platform as the basis of their models. Interestingly, the name "Toronado" held no prior significance and was chosen for a 1963 Chevrolet show car before being used for the Oldsmobile line.
