The Pontiac Bonneville was a model line of full-size or mid-size front-engine rear-drive cars produced by Pontiac from 1957 to 2005, except for a break during model years 1982-1986. It was marketed as the Parisienne in Canada until 1981. The Bonneville and its platform partner, the Grand Ville, were among the largest Pontiac vehicles ever made, with station wagon versions measuring over 230 inches long and weighing over 5,000 pounds, making them some of the heaviest cars of their time. The Bonneville name was inspired by the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, known for auto racing and land speed record attempts, named after U.S. Army officer Benjamin Bonneville. The nameplate originated in 1957 with a limited production performance convertible model. The Bonneville name first appeared in 1954 on GM Motorama concept cars called the Bonneville Special, which resembled the Chevrolet Corvette.
