The Pontiac Bonneville was a model line of full-size or mid-size front-engine rear-drive cars manufactured by Pontiac from 1957 to 2005, with a break between 1982 and 1986. The Bonneville and its platform partner, the Grand Ville, were some of the largest Pontiacs ever produced. In station wagon body styles, they reached lengths of over 230 inches and weighed over 5,000 pounds, making them some of the heaviest cars of their time. The Bonneville name came from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, a famous site for auto racing and land speed records, named after U.S. Army officer Benjamin Bonneville. The Bonneville nameplate originated in 1957 as a limited production performance convertible model. The name had earlier appeared in 1954 on GM Motorama concept cars called the Bonneville Special, which shared an appearance with the Chevrolet Corvette. This marked the start of Pontiac's tradition of using French words for their model names.
