The Pontiac Sunbird, alternatively known as the Pontiac J2000 and Pontiac 2000, was produced by Pontiac from 1976 to 1994 as a compact model line. Acting as the replacement for the Pontiac Astre, the Sunbird became the smallest Pontiac model after its complete takeover in 1978, with the later T1000 sitting beneath it in size. The Sunbird's name is loosely derived from the iconic Pontiac Firebird. Initially based on the subcompact GM H platform, the first generation of the Sunbird shared its underpinnings with the Chevrolet Monza.
